UMBC academic majors sometimes undergo name changes for a variety of reasons.
For consistency, we use the most current name of a major regardless of the alumna/us'
year of graduation and the major name at that time.
1970
Melvin Kulbicki, political science, was awarded the Professional Leadership
and Service Award for his work at York College of Pennsylvania where he is
professor and chair of the Department of History and Political Science.
1973
Abby Sattell, psychology, is self-employed as a travel agent. She and
her husband, Marc Berman, live in Baltimore.
1974
Maury Frieman, interdisciplinary studies, writes that his daughter,
Catherine, will graduate from Yale University in June, 2005. She also
won a Rhodes Scholarship and will attend Oxford University in the fall.
Maury, a mental health therapist, and his family live in Westwood, Mass.
Jim Miller, psychology, is a mortgage loan officer with Olympia Funding
in Annapolis, Md.
1975
Dale Gardner, political science, is a battalion chief with the Howard
County Department of Fire and Rescue Services. He and his wife, Barbara
Miles, are the parents of two sons, Jeffrey (age 21) and Jonathan (age 15).
1976
Ernest Ott, economics, is transportation industry manager at ESRI in
Redlands, Calif.
1978
Kathy Paul, history, is payroll manager for Scottsdale Healthcare. She lives
in Chandler, Ariz.
John Walker, history, is a sales manager with Haulmark Services and lives in
Spring, Tx.
1979
Gary Brooks, history, was featured in the October/November issue of The Abell
Report, an Abell Foundation newsletter, which recognized his volunteer work with
the Baltimore Stars Coalition. The program mentors young basketball players,
encouraging them to build their academic, as well as their athletic, skills.
Joyce Lanzara Carpenter, psychology, is a teacher assistant at Hamilton
Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore. She and her husband, Dean, are the parents
of Devin (age 16) and Katherine (age 14).
1981
David Rosenkilde, American studies, is the owner of ABCO Insurance Services
in Reisterstown. He and his wife, Linda, and son, Brad, live in Kingsville, Md.
1982
Dana Jarvis Bies, emergency health services, is project manager for the
Residential Fire Safety Institute. She and her husband, Michael, and their
children, Kelsey (age 12) and Austin (age 9), live in Maple Grove, Minn.
"Looking for EHS classmates from 1982 and 1983," she writes.
1985
Donna Lewis, English, is an attorney in Washington, D.C.
1990
Fitzhugh Christopher, information systems, is a computer programmer with Data
Computer Corporation of America in Ellicott City, Md.
Mark Lee, visual and performing arts-photography, has shifted gears and is a
real estate agent with Long and Foster in Ellicott City while continuing to
pursue his passion for Porsche racing. "Words can scarcely describe how happy
I am to drive at the limit on the track and in on competition with other drivers,"
he writes.
Intiraporn Mulasastra, M.S. computer science, is an assistant professor at
Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand.
1991

1992
Nancy Kurtz Craven, social work, is a psychotherapist with Granite House, Inc.,
in Westminster, Md. She and her husband, Bruce, are the parents of Sally (age 8)
and Seth (turning 4).
1993
Christina Friedrich Cavey, psychology, works for William V. Walsh Construction in
Rockville, Md. She's project manager on the renovation of the Jefferson and Lincoln
Memorials in Washington, D.C. Christina and her husband, Bruce, are the parents of
Alexis, who's almost two.
Aimee Graham Kawalek, biological sciences, and Louis Kawalek, Jr., were married
on September 17, 2004. Aimee is a research associate with BioGenex Laboratories
in San Ramon, Calif.
1994
Karla Fisher, history, is assistant registrar at the Maryland Institute College
of Art. Her daughter, Madeleine Cooke, turned six last fall.
Dan Garrett, theatre, is the network administrator/LAN coordinator for the U.S.
Department of the Interior's Bureau of Reclamation in Washington, D.C. He was one
of 11 information technology professionals chosen from throughout the Bureau to
be part of the Reclamation Active Directory Implementation and Migration Planning
Team. Dan and his wife, Dianne Signiski Garrett, theatre 1991, and their
two-year-old son, Julian, live in Sudlersville on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
Laurie Phelps Reuben, psychology, was appointed by James Robey, Howard County
Executive, to the county's Equal Business Opportunity Commission. Laurie is
President and CEO of Cheshire Consulting Group in Laurel, Md.
1995
Michael Wright, psychology, is a legal assistant in the Department of Veterans
Affairs in Washington, D.C.
1996
Ereletheia Smith Allen, computer science, and her husband, Kenneth Allen, are the
parents of a daughter, Jayla, who's almost a year old. Ereletheia is owner/network
engineer of EK Systems, LLC. The Allens live in Bowie, Md.
Shari DeLinn Doyle-Chandler, psychology, is an analyst with Femme Comp Inc.,
in Falls Church, Va. Her husband, Tonney Chandler, is a lieutenant colonel/signal
officer with the U.S. Army. They're the parents of Toni-Marie (age 11) and Jordan (age 3).
Victoria Francese Gaunt, visual and performing arts-dance, lives in Columbia, Md.
Mark Watts, political science, teaches English at Old Mill High School in Anne
Arundel County, Md.
1997
Douglas Gearhart, philosophy, is a member of the Army Reserve and was awarded
the Bronze Star and Navy Achievement medal for actions in Iraq. His article about
his experiences in Iraq, "Humanism on the Front Line," appeared in the October/November
2004 issue of Philosophy Now and can be found online at

Sharese Michelle White, biochemistry and molecular biology, is a resident in orthopedic
surgery at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va.
1998
Elias Darraj, mechanical engineering, is chief technology officer for E-Global
Interactive in Baltimore. He just completed his M.B.A. with an emphasis in technology
management from the University of Phoenix. He's also heading a networking group
for businesses in the region, www.accessnetwork.us.
Shannon Goetz Schneider, modern languages and linguistics, and Andrew Schneider
were married on October 16, 2004, and live in Ellicott City, Md. Shannon also received
her doctorate in audiology from Central Michigan University in May.
1999
Yolanda Singletary Seabrooks, American studies, is a corporate trainer with Ascend
One in Columbia, Md. She and her husband, Tyrone Seabrooks, Jr., live in Halethorpe.
Sam Williams, history, has been named assistant athletic director for operations at UMBC.
2000
Lamont Blakely, information systems, is a computer engineering with Boeing in
Springfield, Va. and is pursuing a master's degree in engineering from Johns Hopkins.
Monte and Kristie Lynch were married on July 3, 2004.
Magdalene Ebong Mabiaku, information systems, married Tsegho Mabiaku on July 24,
2004. She is a software engineering with Verizon in Arlington, Va.
Darla Kaye Watts, interdisciplinary studies, is a paralegal with Alan H. Legum in
Annapolis, Md. Darla's daughter, Stacey, is a senior at Loyola College; her son,
Douglas, is a freshman at Anne Arundel Community College.
2001
Anne ("Maggie") McDevitt, psychology, is an eighth-grade science teacher in Ocean,
N.J., and coaches the girl's varsity basketball team. Maggie was a member of the
1996-2001 UMBC women's basketball team and treasurer of the SAAC.
Raymond Sheets, biological sciences and psychology, received his master's degree
in clinical psychology from Loyola College and is working as a mental health
clinician in Howard County, Md.
2002
Mina Cheon, M.F.A. imaging and digital arts, is one of five artists whose work is
being shown at Maryland Art Place's exhibition, "Athena's Daughters." Mina's work,
"Half Moon Eyes," is a multimedia installation focusing on Asian women and cultural
identity. She also is a professor in the foundation department at the Maryland Institute
College of Art and director of MICA Korea, a summer study abroad program. The Maryland
Art Place exhibition runs through January 8, 2005.
Jon Freedlander, psychology, is an operations support analyst with Lockheed Martin
in Washington, D.C. He's also pursuing a master's degree in experimental psychology
at Towson University.
2003
Michael Parks, computer engineering, is a Civil Engineer Corps officer with the
U.S. Navy in Key West, Fla.
Omari Ruiz, information systems, is assistant director of marketing and promotion
for UMBC Athletics.
Renee Rudder Shropshire, sociology, married Darone Shropshire on October 23, 2004.
Renee, who is employed by the National Institutes of Health, and Darone, a software
developer, live in Washington, D.C.
Mark Stewart, psychology and geography and environmental systems '04, is a science
teacher with the Howard County Public School system.
Karl Strauss, political science, is a second-year law student at the University of
Toledo College of Law in Ohio. "I am an associate member of the law review and a
teaching assistant to the associate dean for academic affairs," he writes.
2004
Donnie Canneti, interdisciplinary studies, is teaching drama/theatre arts at Montebello
Junior Academy in Baltimore City. "Parents and classroom teachers have gone out of their
way to share their children's excitement and love of my program," he writes. "I couldn't
be happier!"
Dmitriy May, computer science, is a software engineering with AT&T in Columbia, Md.
FRIENDS WE WILL MISS
G. William Brooks, M.F.A. imaging and digital arts '99, on November 29, 2004,
in White Marsh, Md. He is survived by his partner, Nick Scarpulla, and his
mother and two brothers.
Joseph F. Mulligan, emeritus professor of physics and the first dean of the
Graduate School, on October 11, 2004. The author of two textbooks and numerous
papers, Mulligan continued his interest in physics after his retirement, especially
the nineteenth century German physicists, about whom he continued to publish until
last year. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Mulligan, visual and performing
arts-music '81, of Salisbury, Md.
Kristin Sohr, health administration and policy '89, on February 17, 2004, of
cancer. Prior to her death, she had been living in Park City, Utah. Survivors
include her fiancé, Jeff Smith, her mother and father, and four siblings.
