the context of social issues of most
concern to French society. The films will
encompass a range of genres and styles
that reflect the diversity of French film
production. Some of the themes to be
analyzed in these films include class,
ethnic and gender relations in contempory
France, as well as the relationship of the
individual to society and of minority to
majority French culture. Discussion will
also focus on the role of French cinema in
the construcion of hanging concepts of
French national identity in the
representation of the history of the
French nation. Interculturality will be
considered in the analysis of the
portrayal of sub-groups in French society
and in the examination of the relation of
French cinematic production to the
aesthetics and values of Hollywood.
