explore the period if the Great Migration,
the massive movement of African Americans
from the South to the urban North which
occured in the early 20th century.
Emphasis will be placed on transformations
that occured in American popular culture
as a result of black migration. The blues
and jazz environment will be explored in
depth. The course also examines the
various motivations for leaving the South,
gender dynamics, urbanization,
industrialization and the interracial
class tensions encountered in cities such
as Chicago and New York in the aftermathof
migration. Students will examine
biographical, fictional, musical and film

Sexuality in the West
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course is a
broad survey of changing sexual practices
and beliefs aboutsexuality from ancient
Greece to contemporary America. Topics
include the development of homosexual
identities; the adoption of clerical
celibacy within the Catholic church, the
regulation of prostitution, censorship and
the definition of poronography, medical
responses to masturbation, the syphilis
epidemic in early modern Europe and the
contemporary AIDS epidemic,the development
of birth control pills and the "sexual
revolution" and its impact. WARNING:
Students should register for this course
only if they are prepared to study these
controversial topics. Readings contain
explicit discussions of sexuality. Also

World War II: History and Memory

concerned with memory of WWII in Japan,
China, Korea, France and Germany and the
construction of the history of that
conflict. How have people in these
countries remembered their WWII pasts, and
how have their memories affected the ideas
they have of themselves? In turn, how do
these ideas of identity affect memory? We
will focus on the competition over the
ownership of memory, how memory has been
given concete form in war
memorials,museums and textbooks, and the
political uses to which memory has been
put. Some specific topics to be covered
include the Rape of Nanjing, Korean
military comfort women, textbook and
museum controversies in Japan and the U.S.
and the "Vichy syndrome."
