HIST 714 Colloquium in Intellectual History 3 credits

Grade Method: REG This course is concerned
with memory of WWII in Japan, China,
Korea, France and Germany and the
construction of the history of that
conflict. How have people in these
countries remembered their WWII pasts, and
how have their memories affected the ideas
they have of themselves? In turn, how do
these ideas of identity affect memory? We
will focus on the competition over the
ownership of memory, how memory has been
given concrete form in war memorials,
museums and textbooks, and the political
uses to which memory has been put. Some
specific topics to be covered include the
Rape of Nanjing, Korean military comfort
          women, textbook and museum controversies
in Japan and the U.S., and the "Vichy
          syndrome."
