Issues in Maryland & Washington D.C.

students participatin in the Intercultural
Living Exchange. Other students may enroll
after July 5, 2003. This course will be
required of students chosen to reside in
the Intercultural Living Exchange (ILE), a
living learning floor in the New Hall
developed by MLL in partnership with
Residential Life and the Shriver Center.
The course will entail 4 credits for which
students will spend 150 minutes in the
classroom and 3 hours a week in heritage
communities of public elementary schools
doing service learning related to language
acquisition and intercultural
communication. This service learning
course will examine the difficulties faced
by new immigrants and other members of
heritage communities in the Maryland/D.C.
region and explore the ways in which the
development of intercultural competence
can help resolve cultural conflicts in a
multicultural society. Guest speakers from
local heritage communites will be invited
to participate in the seminars. The course
is open to UMBC students not residing in
the ILE.
