presents historical and conceptual
developments in Jewish thought through a
study of works by prominent Jewish
thinkers, mystics and ethical writers.
Lectures, discussions and assignments will
explore the nature of post-Biblical Jewish
legal and ethical writings (Mishna, Talmud
and Midrash): the focal themes in
classical Jewish philosophy; the varieties
of Jewish mysticism and Kabbalah; the
religious beliefs of Hasidism; and the
emergence of modern religious and secular
Jewish thinking in the 19th and 20th
centuries.
