ART 435A Topics in Filmmaking Collaborative Cinema 3 credits
(PermReq) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course will
explore different modes filmmalkers have
used to work together in making films.
We'll look at traditional ways of
organizing film shoots (the Hollywood film
crew) and less hierarchical models. We'll
view work that resonates with many (often
contradictory) voices as well as work that
attempts to hide fissures between various
participants. We'll discuss directing
actors (ensemble, method and
imporvisational styles), sound mixing and
set lighting. In class we'll work as a
unit in creating one short piece, omnibus
style. Then students will form small
groups to work on a semester long project
that gives voice to ideas generated by the
group. How to work together? Should
differences of style and ideology be
erased or emphasized? Readings and
discussions about work that negotiates
issues of artistic territory will
elucidate some possible strategies.
