Information Retrieval
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course is
an introduction to the theory and
implementation of software systems
designed to search through large
collections of text. Information retrieval
(IR) is one of the oldest branches of
computer science, and has influenced
nearly every aspect of computer usage:
"search and replace" in a word processor,
querying a card catalog, grep'ing through
source code, filtering the spam out of
email, searching the Web. This course will
have two main thrusts. The first is to
cover the fundamentals of IR:retrieval
models, search algorithms, and IR
evaluation. The second is to give a taste
of the implementation issues through a
semester-long project. Also listed as CMSC
691I. Prerequisite: CMSC 341, CMSC 441,
MATH 221 and STAT 355 recommended.

Server Technologies
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course is
an in-depth look at several server-side
Java technologies, primarily Java Servlet
and Java Server Pages (JSP). The benefits
of Java Servlets and JSP will be discussed
and the two will be compared to similar
technologies such as Active Server Pages
and PHP. Several Servlet/JSP projects will
be done using the Apache Tomcat web
server. In addition, several related
technologies, such as PHP, XML, JDBC and
Javascript, will be covered. Also listed
as CMSC 691J. Prerequisite: CMSC 331 and
CMSC 341.

CMSC 491L Special Topics in Computer Science 3 credits
Advanced Natural Language Processing
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course will
be devoted to methods of extracting,
formally representing and automatically
manipulating meaning of natural language
texts. The main topics will cover the main
issues in ontological semantics, an
approach to text meaning treatment. The
course will be research-oriented and will
combine regular lectures and exams with
research projects that will give students
hands-on experience of working in an
actual R&D team at the Institute for
Language and Information Technologies
(ILIT), one of the research entities at
UMBC. Also listed as CMSC 691L.
