Caribbean, the independent nation of Haiti
and the French overseas departments of
Guadeloupe and Martinique share discourses
of French colonialism and
postcololonialism that have produced
outstanding cultural works in the French
languages. French 303/303H will focus on
literary and cinematographic text created
in French by Caribbean writers and movie
directors. While situating these creations
in their respective historical, social and
political contexts, the course will
emphasize the themes of subjugation and
resistance, the tensions between and oral
tradition primarily anchored in Creole
languages and a literary tradition of
primarily French expression, and the
various cultural constructions of
Caribbean identity represented in these
text. Tentative: Course work in FREN
303/303H may be linked by participating
students to study travel experience in
Martinique and Guadeloupe in January 2004.

this semester, FREN 401 will have a
cultural or linguistic theme each time it
is offered, although its primary emphasis
will continue to be advanced language
skills, particulary writing. The course
may now be repeated for credit as topic
change. For Fall 2003, the theme will be
French sociolinguistics. Among the
subjects to be discussed: the
ideologiesthat support the French
language, the struggle against English,
minority languages in France, language and
gender, and language and politics.
