          was  characterized by the  trauma of World
          War    I,   tumultuous   party   politics,
          short-lived  revolutions, the  women's and
          sexual  liberation movement,  and the rise
          fascism.    It   was   also   a   time  of
          tremendouscultural  output. In this course
          we  will  discuss  novels,  drama, poetry,
          philosophical  and  political  essays, and
          flms  from the period  in their historical
          context.   Student projects on visual art,
          dance,  fashion, music,  and the political
          movements of the time are also encouraged.
          Writers  and filmakers may include: Walter
          Benjamin,  Gottfried Benn, Bertolt Brecht,
          Marieluise  Fleisser  Irmgard  Keun, Fritz
          Lang,   Else  Lasker-Schuler  and  others.
