Complementary Medicine: An
Interdisciplinary Inquiry
(PermReq) Grade Method: REG/AUD Complementary and
alternative therapies, such as
acupuncture, naturopathy, herbal
treatments, meditation, chiropractic and
therapeutic massage are so interwoven in
the fabrice of American healthcare that it
may no longer be relevant to draw firm
lines between complementary and
conventional medicine,suggests a
nationwide survey conducted by the
Stanford Center for Research in Disease
Prevention. Many complementary medicine
techniques represent different ways of
thinking about wellness, health and
disease, which are deeply rooted in
distinct histories, philosphies and
languages. Health care involves knowledge
and practice in patient care, research
methods and basic economic issues. This
seminar will explore how complementary
medicine and alternative therapies are
being used, examine questions of efficacy,
and explore healthcare policy responses in
terms of research funding and coverage by
insurance companies. Students will have
the opportunity to meet experienced and
distinguished practitioners of different
therapies.

Interdisciplinary Perspectives on
Leadership
(PermReq) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This seminar
will explore the role and importance of
leadership both its general application
and in specific areas of interest to
individual students. A variety of
techniques will be employed to uncover
preconceptions about leadership, to
explore cultural differences in the value
placed on leadership, and to help us in
own definition of leadership. Throughout
our explorations we shall keep an open
mind about whether leadership is a good we
should pursue. Whether you seek to be a
leader, to challenge one, or simply deepen
your concepts of leadership, this seminar
will provide a foundation for achieving
your goals or for changing them.
