AFST 440D Topics in African and Afro-American 3 credits
Studies Class and Color in African
          Disaporic Literature

Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course will
explore the impact of class and color on
the social dynamics of people of African
Descent, as well as how these
          classifications shape one's identity.
Notions of class and color have fueled the
imagination of creative artists of Africa
and the African diaspora. Much of this
          artistic rendering is prophetic, often
painful, yet beautiful. Writers such as
Amiri Baraka, Gloria Naylor, Bessie Head,
Ishmael Reed, and Edwidge Danticat will be
examined to explore how these social
          classifications preoccupy the inner-and
          outer-world of their characters.
