representation in the cinema. The line
between negative and positive portraits is
fluid and permeable, and filmmakers have
struggled with contractual issues
involving their subjects since the
invention of the medium. What does the
maker owe her subject? Does the very act
of filming involve some level of
manipulation and deceit? We will look at
documentary and narrative films as
examples of how to explore this explosive
territory.
