Nuclear Issues in the Age of Terrorism
(PermReq) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course
examines nuclear-energy and
nuclear-weapons issues in the post-Cold
War era. With the end of the Cold War,
many people assumed that nuclear-related
challanges were a thing of the past. After
all, the end of the U.S.-Soviet nuclear
arms race meant that we would not have to
live with the prospect of nuclear
Armageddon on a daily basis. Or did it?
Contrary to the optimistic predictions of
many analysts, the post-Cold War world has
generated its own nuclear dangers, some
familiar and some new. Nuclear
proliferation, environmental degradation,
and the possiblity of nuclear terrorism
are atop the international security agenda
as we move into the 21st century.
Ironically, the U.S,-Soviet nuclear arm
reduction and dismantling process has
yield a variety of new dangers that were
largely unanticipated. Taking apart the
destroying nuclear capabilities reduces
the prospect of accidental nuclear
launches, but increases the potential for
nuclear theft by - or black market sales
to - terrorists. Not only that, but a
growing awarness of diminishing energy
resources - especially oil, but also
natural gas - has generated renewed
discussion about the feasibility and
desirability of nuclear power as primary
source of energy in an increasingly
energy-hungry world. Is nuclear power
safe? Is it efficient? Is it
environmentaly friendly? Many people would
answer "no" to these questions, but their
objections based on gut instinct or a real
understanding of the properities and
consequences of nuclear energy? This
course will cover the military and
civilian dimensions of nuclear power. It
will look at comtemporary nuclear issues
from the vantage point of social,
political, strategic, economic and ethical
perspectives. Also listed as INDS 430B.
