AMST 355 Special Topics in Culture and Policy Women 3 credits
and Gender in US Business History
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course will
explore women's participation in the
social and economic institutions we
commonly call "business." It will trace
female entrepreneurship from colonial
midwifery to Tupperware, and examine how
modern women transformed traditional
business models to build giant
corporations in "feminine" markets like
cosmetics. Readings will also construct
women as producers, investors, and
consumers. Fundamentally, this course
examines the cultural context for women's
engagement in the market and how that
behavior has challenged conventional
definitions of business in the United
States. Also listed as WMST390A and
HIST355D.

AMST 356 Special Topics in Community and Diversity 3 credits
Gender & the Environment
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Does nature have
a gender? Are there specifically male or
female types of environmentalism? What
role does gender play in contemporary
environmental issues? Does ecological
sustainability require gender equity? This
course will explore the many intersections
between gender and the environment. We
will begin with an examination of basic
concepts in gender and environmental
studies, such as gender equity,
sustainability, gender and the environment
as constructed categories and ecofeminist
theory. Part two of the course exlores the
history of gender and the environment with
a focus on the history of the U.S.
environmental movement. The course
concludes with an exploration of current
environmental issues such as development,
population, reproduction, and sustainable
living. The course will run as a seminar
with an emphasis on group discussion. Also
listed as WMST390B and GEOG302B.

and the Arts SPORTS AND MEDIA
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course
examines the American sports industry as
it intersects with issues of power and
ideology in the media. Through a reading
of print media, as well as an analysis of
sports in American culture, students will
have the opportunity to view the multiple
aspects of sports beyond its entertainment
value. In particular, the course will
utilize the concept of "ultimate
meritocracy" to investigate its
manifestation in the American sports
industry.
