events in that country's history. The
French have never really come to terms
with it, and its effects are felt even
today. In this course, we will study the
period of the occupation and will look at
the noteworthy individuals involved and
the ordinary people whose lives were
turned upside down. We will also consider
the vexing question of who resisted, who
collaborated, and who simply tried to
survive. Finally, we will examine why the
occupation continues to be a controversial
and heartbreaking topic up to the present
day. Materials will include film,
literature, and historical documents.
