Science
(PermReq) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Students
enrolled in this course will gain
experience in field sampling, laboratory
procedures and data analysis. Exercises
will involve field and laboratory work
with some combination of water, soils,
vegetation, landforms, and atmospheric
phenomena. Students will work in teams
and each will develop a final research
project for presentation at the end of the
semester. This a required course for
students majoring in Environmental Science
or Environmental Studies. Prerequisites:
GEOG 120, MATH 150 and either BIOL 100 or

GEOG 280 Map Use and Cartographic Principles 4 credits
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This is an
introductory course designed to establish
the foundations necessary for map use,
interpretation, design, layout and basic
production methods in use today. There is
a laboratory component to this course and
students should expect to spend several
hours each week working in the lab on
assigned projects. This course is required

GEOG 302B Selected Topics in Geography GENDER AND 3 credits
ENVIRONMENT
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Does nature have
a gender? Are there specifically male or
female types of environmentalism? What
role does gender play in contemporary
environmental issues? Does ecological
sustainability require gender equity? This
course will explore the many intersections
between gender and the environment. We
will begin with an examination of basic
concepts in gender and environmental
studies, such as gender equity,
sustainability, gender and the environment
as constructed categories, and ecofeminist
theory. Part two of the course explores
the history of gener and the environment
with a focus on the history of the US
environmental movement. The course
concludes with an exploration of current
environmental issues such as development,
population, reproduction, and sustainable
living. The course will run as a seminar
with an emphasis on group discussion. Also
listed as AMST 356 and WMST 390B.
