          Gender in US Business History

Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course will
          explore women's participation in the
          social and economic institutions we
commonly call "business." It will trace
          female entrepreneurship from colonial
midwifery to Tupperware, and examine how
          modern women transformed traditional
          business models to build giant
          corporations in "feminine" markets like
          cosmetics. Readings will also construct
          women as producers, investors and
          consumers. Fundamentally, this course
examines the cultural context for women's
engagement in the market and how that
          behavior has challenged conventional
definitions of business in the United
States. Also listed as WMST390A and AMST
          355.

          covers the causes, consequences and
documentation of European warfare from the
Crimean to the Algerian war for
          Independence. Nineteenth and
          twentieth-century conflicts involving
France, Britain, Germany, Russia, and the
United States will be covered, including
World Wars One and Two. Students will
explore the role of film, literature and
          photography in representations of warfare
and imperialism, and how such images were
consumed on the homefront. Students will
have the opportunity to work with
