Mexico to Beijing: Assessment of 30 Years
of International Work on Women's Issues
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD
GFR/GER:Meets L. GDR:Meets L. In this
seminar, we will review changes in the
socio-economic and political position of
Latin American women during the last
thirty years. The seventies were years of
change in Latin American societies; many
countries were entering the worst period
of political repression, while the
political systems were proving themselves
to be extrememly defective. Women in Latin
America and in the rest of the world
started to realize their own subordinate
position relating to the men in their
countries, focusing more on their own
needs and problems. In 1975, the United
Nations organized the first conference
dedicated to women's problems,
subsequently declaring 1975-1985 the
"Women's Decade." In 1995, countries
reunited in Beijing and committed to fight
gender inequality through public policies
oriented to reach women equality in
national, regional, local, and family
areas. Prerequisite: SPAN 302, 308 and one
other 300 level course or permission of
the instructor. This course is taught in
Spanish.
