instructor. The purpose of the course is
to focus on a literary corpus comprising
four novels from Francophone Sub-Saharan
Africa in light of Negritude and other
intellectual movements. The weekly
readings will enable us to discuss
cultural identity, national consciousness,
colonialism, post-colonialism, the
invention of Africa in western
consciousness, the indigenous narratives
such as the tradition of the griot and
storytelling versus the novel, monotheist
religions versus animism, indigenous
beliefs and polytheism, the disappointment
of subjectivity in post-independence and
postcolonial times, immigration, and the
status of women. Documentaries and films
will be screened to complement our
understanding of the issues at stake.
