GWST 680 Theories of Feminism 3 credits
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course
examines contemporary feminist theories of
women's oppression and liberation. The
class will read major works of twentieth
century feminine thinkers, and analyze the
theoretical perspectives they represent,
and discuss the commonalities and
differences between them. The issues we
will examine from a feminine perspective
will include gender, experience, identity,
difference, equality, sexuality,
mothering, wage work, racism, imperialism,
language and representation. Throughout
the course, we will consider the
historical, social, intellectual, and
political contexts within which these
theories developed, including the
relationship of feminist theory and the
contemporary women's movements. The course
will also examine key differences among
women based upon race, class, sexual
orientation, culture, religion and
nationality, as well as strategies for
effectively negotiating those differences.
Also listed as GWST480. Prerequisite:
GWST100, GWST/AMST310 or permission of the
instructor.
