          Society: Prospects for Sustainable                
          Development                                       

(PermReq) Grade  Method:  REG/AUD  THIS  COURSE WILL
          EXPLORE    THE   INTERNATIONAL   COMMUNITY
          RESPONSES  TO  THE  CHALLENGES  FACING THE
          WORLD'S  POOR.  THESE  RESPONSES  WILL  BE
          EXAMINED  WITH PARTICULAR  EMPHASIS PLACED
          ON  THE TENSIONS WHICH ARISE AS THE FORCES
          OF   GLOBALIZATION   ARE   CHALLENGED  AND
          INFORMED    BY    IDEAS   ON   SUSTAINABLE
          DEVELOPMENT. THE DIFFERING INTERPRETATIONS
          OF     GLOBALIZATION    AND    SUSTAINABLE
          DEVELOPMENT WILL BE A PRIMARY THEME IN THE
          COURSE.  STUDENTS  WILL  BE  GUIDED  IN AN
          ANALYSIS  OF THE ACTIVITIES  OF THE RECENT
          UNITED    NATIONS    WORLD    SUMMIT    IN
          JOHANNESBURG   AND   ITS   AFTERMATH.   BY
          IDENTIFYING   AND   INTEGRATING  ECONOMIC,
          POLITICAL,  AND  CULTURAL  FRAMEWORKS  AND
          METHODOLOGIES, THE COURSE WILL EXAMINE THE
          POTENTIAL   IMPACT   OF  GLOBALIZATION  ON
          POVERTY,  HUNGER, POLLUTION,  DISEASE, AND
          CONFLICT.  THROUGH WOLRD SUMMIT CONFERENCE
          PROPOSALS,  GUEST SPEAKERS,  READINGS, AND
          CLASS DISCUSSIONS, STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP A
          CRITICAL  UNDERSTANDING OF HOW IN THE FACE
          OF    THESE    CHALLENGES,    LOCAL    AND
          INTERNATIONAL POLICY DECISIONS ARE MADE.

          EXPLORES  THE BUSINESS DRIVERS OF MEDICINE
          IN  AND  OUTSIDE  OF THE  US, UTILIZING AN
          INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO IDENTIFYING,
          MEASURING,  AND DEBATING  THE CONSEQUENCES
          OF   MANY  FORCES  THAT  HAVE  SHAPED  OUR
          CURRENT    MEDICAL    SYSTEMS.   USING   A
          COMBINATION  OF ECONOMICS,  PUBLIC POLICY,
          MARKETING,  PUBLIC HEALTH,  SOCIAL SCIENCE
          AND  QUANTATIVE RESEARCH METHODS, STUDENTS
          WILL  ACTIVELY  DEBATE  WHAT  SUCESSES AND
          FAILURES  EXIST IN  MEDICINE, AND DOCUMENT
          THIS  DEBATE WITH EVIDENCE THAT THEY CRAFT
          ON   INDEPENDENT  AND  TEAM-BASED  PROJECT
          WORK.  STUDENTS  WILL 'LIVE'  ALL SIDES OF
          CONFLICTS  AND TRIUMPHS IN THE BUSINESS OF
          MEDICINE.   IN   AN  EFFORT  TO  CREATE  A
          REAL-WORLD         SETTING,        SEVERAL
          MULTI-DISCIPLINARY    PROBLEMS   WILL   BE
          ADDRESSED  BY  STUDENTS; THEY  WILL DEFINE
          PROBLEMS,    CONDUCT   RESEARCH,   PRESENT
          SOLUTIONS  AND  DEFEND THEIR  POSITIONS AS
          THEY   TAKE   ON   THE  ROLES  OF  VARIOUS
          PROFESSIONALS   WITHIN   THE  BUSINESS  OF
          MEDICINE.
