          Design

Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Innovation is an
          often overlooked critical success factor
in design and business; those who can
          correctly and appropriately define
problems are better able to apply
innovative concepts and skills to address
          the multi-dimensional nature of today's
          complex problems. This advanced course
will deal with concepts of innovation and
design. We will address issues of
          marketing, technology, and cultural
awareness for the purpose of having a view
of Innovation and Design. Innovation is
the foundation of this course which should
lead us to formulating successful design,
products, and solutions with a focus on
the end user. Students in this course
will learn methods that allow them to

(PermReq) Grade Method: REG Jean Luc Goddard once
defined cinema as "truth, 24 times per
second." We will examine this notion along
          with other historical premises of
documentary filmmaking and see how these
traditional ideas have been subverted or
reconfigured in an age of web-cams,
          surveillance video, reality television,
          Photoshop, YouTube, the internet, and
          cellphone video recordings. Each student
will make a documentary film or video on a
subject of his or her choice. We will
          screen excerpts of important documentary
films from all periods and try to discover
what values and methods endure and what
          demands our particular historic moment
might be making on this genre.

          Computer Art: Landscape Cubed

(PermReq) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Open to IRC
Fellows only; course will meet in ITE 109.
From painting to sculpture, from panoramic
photography to QuickTime VR, and from
          dioramas to virtual reality, the
          challenges of effectively representing or
recreating a landscape are enormous. This
course will look specifically at issues of
unwrapping an environment to create a 2D
image, and wrapping an image to be a 3D.
          Students will use panoramic photograpy,
QuickTime VR, 3D modeling, and 2-3D paint
programs to both recreate real world
          landscapes and to present fictitious
environments. A mixture of individual and
group projects will allow students to
create 2D and 3D environments as formal
landscapes or as a locales for events.
This course is for students in the IRC
Fellows Program only. Also listed as ART
