FREN 103  Intensive Review of Elementary French                   4 credits

          Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD
          GEP:N/A.  GFR:Meets  L.   This  course  is
          designed  for students  who have completed
          level   3  in  high  school  and  who  are
          nevertheless   unprepared  for  FREN  201,
          either as the result of an interruption of
          5  years in their study of the language or
          as a result of a weak language background.
          Permission  of the department is required.
          Students may receive credit for either 102
          or  103,  but not both,  and either 102 or
          103    may    be   used   towards   UMBC's
          language/culture requirement.  FREN 103 is
          a  hybrid  course that meets  face to face
          three hours a week; a fourth hour consists
          of   interactive   web-based  and  on-site

          Feminisms Past and Present.

          traces  the  history  of  French feminisms
          from the Middle Ages to the XXIst Century,
          highlighting  changes  in  the  status  of
          women  in modern French society as well as
          gender  issues pertinent to French society
          today.  Readings include  texts of popular
          culture,   poetry,  fiction,  essays,  and
          autobiography, and will be complemented by
          the  examination  of  French  feminisms in
          cinema. In French.

          Society Beur and Banlieue Cinema.

          GEP:N/A.  GFR:Meets L.  In  this course we
          will  look at films  by young directors of
          Maghrebi  descent as well  as films set in
          France's  disadvantaged outer-city housing
          estates.  These films  mobilize the voices
          and    narratives    of    France's   most
          stigmatized postcolonial others to address
          issues  of ethnicity  and difference which
          are central to debates about what it means
          to be French.

          Society Beur and Banlieue Cinema.

          640 will complete additional readings that
          emphasize intercultural identity, cultural
          hybridity, and Homi Bhabha's notion of the
          "third space."
