SPAN 103  Intensive Review of Elementary Spanish                  4 credits

          designed  for students  who have completed
          Level   3  in  high  school  and  who  are
          nevertheless unprepared for SPAN201 either
          as  the  result  of  an interruption  of 5
          years in their study of the language or as
          a  result  of a  weak language background.
          Permission  of the department is required.
          Students may receive credit for either 102
          or  103,  but not both,  and either 102 or
          103    may    be    used   toward   UMBC's
          language/culture  requirement. SPAN 103 is
          a  hybrid  course that meets  face to face
          three   hours  per  week;  a  fourth  hour
          consists   of  interactive  web-based  and

          that   indigenous   communities   play  in
          contemporary    Latin    America.   Paying
          particular  attention  to  Mexico, Ecuador
          and Bolivia we will consider the evolution
          of  the  region's indigenous  movements as
          vehicles    for    recognizing    cultural
          diversity  and  demanding  more  equitable
          treatment   for   the   most  marginalized
          sectors.   Classes,  reading  and  writing
          assignments  are all  in Spanish. Pre-req:
          SPAN  302,  308  and  one  other 300-level
          course or permission of the instructor.
