Studies African Americans: Less Separate,
Less Equal
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD An analytical
assessment of the social and economic
ramifications of the predominant legal
decisions and legislative acts that have
defined and created the modern day
opportunities afforded African Americans.
The survey begins with Plessy v. Ferguson,
which established the "separate but equal"
doctrine, and continues with Brown v. the
Board of Education, which in 1945
overturned government sanctioned
segregation. Also examined are the Civil
Right Acts of the 1960s, which sought to
compel institutional integration, and
Bakke which largely initiated challenges
to affirmative action and forced
integration. Review and assessment of such
legal decisions and legislative acts will
be used to provide and evaluation of the
social and legal progress of blacks in
America.
