Society (L) National Identity and Public
Memory in France
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD
GER: meets L. GDR: meets L. This course
will examine how public memory has served
to shape national identity in contemporary
France. What are the events, the symbols,
and the shared experiences that constitute
collective French memory? What role does
the practice of commemoration play in the
continuity between past and present? How
does the past nourish political and
cultural debates today? Concentrating on
three themes - Nation, Republic, France,
we will look at different examples of
"lieux de memoire" (realms of memory) that
sustain and transform national identity.
We will also analyze political
appropriations of national symbols, as
well as episodes in French history over
which the stakes of memory remain acute
and contested, The objective of this
course is to engage in analytical
discussion of issues of identity, memory
and history in French society in the
French language.
