interdisciplinary course introduces
students to the basic issues of
intercultural communication and acquaints
them with the fundamentals of
intercultural training. Drawing on
linguistic theory, anthropological
definitions of culture and ethnicity, and
extensive case studies, the course begins
with a discussion of the nature and
function of verbal and nonverbal
communication in the multicultural
settings. The second part of the course
examines the ways in which conflicts may
arise between cultures and explores the
development of intercultural training.
Prerequisite: junior or senior standing or
prior study in anthropology, linguistics,
or intercultural communication.

Linguistics Cultural Policies in
Comparative Perspective EV-US
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course will
compare cultural policies in the US with
those of the European Union in a variety
of different fields and countries (e.g.
museums,tourism, theaters, film industry,
etc.). It will begin by discussing a
common conceptual and methodological
framework for comparison, including art
and culture, history of private,
non-profit and state subsidization and
their interrelationship and selected
political controversies. Foreign language
students may compare examples in the US
with countries in their target languages.
Discussion, required readings and papers
