PHIL 600  Proseminar in Applied Ethics                             1 credit

          Grade  Method: REG/P-F/AUD  The Proseminar
          is   a  course  structured  around  public
          lectures and colloquia, with participation
          from  faculty and the community, developed
          in   association   with   the  Center  for
          Biomedical Ethics.  The Proseminar will be
          organized around different topics relating
          to public need served by professionals and
          to  faculty  research  interests. Students
          enrolled  in  the  Proseminar  will attend
          these events and complete a project on the
          topic. Repeatable for credit.  This course
          will   be   taught  at  the  Shock  Trauma
          Auditorium.

PHIL 653  Ethical Issues in Medicine                              3 credits

          Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD genetic testing;
           cloning;  organ  transplants; experiments
           on humans subjects; the physician-patient
           relationship;  informed consent, autonomy
           and  lying to  patients; confidentiality;
           abortion and surrogate motherhood; health
           care  rationing; managed  care and health
           care   reform.  We  will  approach  these
           issues   as   moral   rahter  than  legal
           thinkers:  in other words,  we will focus
           on  what  the  right  response  to  these
           practices   (by   lawmakers,  physicians,
           citizens) ought to be, rather than on the
           regulation  that  currently  exists. This
           class  meets at the Law School. The class
           will  hold  its first  meeting on January

           Bioethics:  This seminar  will begin with
           an    introduction   to   major   ethical
           theories.  Using  this  ba   ckground, we

           medical futility;
