WMST 390F Topics in Women's Studies Queer 3 credits
Representations in Film and Television
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD While queer
characters and subject matters seem almost
"mainstream" in American popular culture,
there was a time when such representations
were problematic and/or revolutionary. In
this course, armed with an understanding
of the power that images convey in
culture, we will explore the historical
and contemporary representations of queer
people in American film and television, as
well as the ways issues of queerness have
intersected with issues of race and
gender. Through a discussion of common
themes like "sissy" cowboys, "mannish"
lesbians, lesbian vampires and gay
killers, drag queens, AIDS patients, queer
parenting, transgender issues andcoming
out, we will develop our own ideas of what
queer resistant cinema might look like.
