Studies The Black Arts Movement
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Consideration of
the historical, cultural, and political
context of the Black Arts Movement {BAB},
the cultural/artistic wing of the Black
Power Movement that existed from the
mid-1960's to the mid-1970's; and its
literary predecessors, as well as the
poetry, plays, and manifestoes of the
movement which attempted to articulate an
authentically black sound, primarily
through the use of poetry and theatre in
performance modes. Its impact on the
linkage with contemporary artistic
movements like the New Black Aesthetic and
Hip Hop also will be examined. Readings
will include those from such authors as
Zora Neale Hurston, James Baldwin, Amiri
Baraka, Haki Madhubuti, Maulana Karenga,
Hoyt Fuller and Malcolm X.

Studies Over, Under & Out: Current
Challenges Facing Black
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Consideration of
the current challenges facing Black
students within the elementary and
secondary education segment of the
population. This course will undertake a
comparative analysis of performance issues
and problems for Black under-achievers,
over-achievers, stop-outs and drop-outs.In
addition to public education, alternative
approaches {e.g., privatization,
home-schooling, distance learning} will be
reviewed and presented as possible
solutions to successful completion of
basic education for such students. Teacher
training, standardized testing, and
corporate partnerships will also be
examined for the role they play as
possible influences on academic
performance. In addition to a review of
literature, class discussions, and quest
speakers, students will also be madr aware
of the current opinions of parents,
community leaders, and non-professionals.
On-site visits (fieldwork) also will be
arranged with diverse local educational
institutions for observations and
interviews withe teachers and students.
