GEOG 400 Selected Topics in Geography Topical 3 credits
Atmosphere & Ocean:Global Impacts
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course
examines the tropical atmosphere and
oceans as key driving forces of global
climates and of weather in mid-latitudes.
A main theme is the role of ocean
circulations tropical thunderstorms,
hurricanes, and "coupled" phenomena such
as El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in
the global cycles of water and energy.
The course explores concepts behind
seasonal prediction of regional climates,
hurricane activity, and ENSO. Past and
future influence of Tropics of global
climate from continental drift to
deforestation is examined, emphasizing the
impacts of human civilization. An
important focus is on the use of
satellites and in-situ measurements for
monitoring the tropical atmosphere and
oceans. Prerequisite: GEOG 311, Junior
standing or consent of instructor.
