Colonialism in the 17th and 18th Centuries
(PermReq) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This
graduate/advanced undergraduate course is
an exercise in global history, focused on
the Dutch empire in the 17th and 18th
centuries. We will study Dutch colonies in
North America, South America, Africa and
Asia. We will use New Netherland, Surinam,
Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) and
Batavia (Indonesia) as case studies. We
will look at the relationships between the
Dutch and natives in each of these
colonies. We will also investigate how the
Dutch got their labor needs met through a
mixture of free and enslaved labor and how
differently slavery (and resistance to it)
developed in each of the colonies. We will
read both secondary and primary sources
(in English translations) and make use of
the various websites developed for the
400th anniversary of the VOC (Dutch East
India Company) in 2004. We will start the
course with a discussion of global history
and an overview of the Dutch Republic in
the Golden Age before delving into
specific colonies. No prior knowledge of
Dutch history is necessary or assumed.
