MATH 490A Special Topics in Mathematics game theory 3 credits
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Game theory
mathematically models strategic
interaction among two or more individuals
in situations involving varying levels of
conflict or cooperation. In
non-cooperative game theory, we will
examine two person zero sum games based on
Von Neumann's minmax theroem and its
connection with linear programming. In
situations with lesser conflict, but lack
of communication, the equilibria of John
Nash will be studied along with some
refinements. Many person versions of
these will be studied as well. The case
with perfect communication is cooperative
game theory where the objective is optimal
allocation of proceeds of the game among
the individual participants. Solution
concepts to be studied are Pareto optima,
core allocations, Shapley values and
variants. Some applications to economics,
political science and biology may be
examined as time permits. The include
price equilibria, measures of voting
power, auction theory, fair division, and
evolutionary game theory. Prerequisite:
MATH301 and basic probability. An
acquaintance with linear programming is a
plus.

MATH 490B Special Topics in Mathematics Designs and 3 credits
Codes
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course
provides an introduction to both the
theory of balanced incomplete block
designs and error-correcting codes. The
course includes applications of designs
and codes to the construction of Latin
squares, Hadamard matrices, pseudorandom
sequences, synchronization patterns and
signal sets for spread-spectrum
communications.A topic for in-depth study
will be cyclic difference sets with Singer
parameters which arise from pseudorandom
binary sequences with ideal
autocorrelation and which find use
worldwide for such applications as
synchronization and randomization. The
course will survey this important topic
from the classical results of Gauss and
Galois to the sensational recent results
which have produced new infinite families
of these difference sets and sequences for
all prime characteristics p. Throughout
the course, there will be encountered many
fascinating unsolved problems which could
be appropriate for thesis research.
Prerequisite: MATH 221 is a must;
familiarity with the structures of
abstract algebra, i.e., groups, rings and
fields, is helpful, but not a
prerequisite. Also listed as MATH710A.
