interdisciplinary course introduces
students to the basic issues of
intercultural communication and acquaints
them with the fundamentals of
intercultural training. Drawing on
linguistic theory, anthropological
definitions of culture and ethnicity, and
extensive case studies, the course begins
with a discussion of the nature and
function of verbal and nonverbal
communication in the multicultural
settings. The second part of the course
examines the ways in which conflicts may
arise between cultures and explores the
development of intercultural training.
Prerequisite: junior or senior standing or
prior study in anthropology, linguistics,
or intercultural communication.

Linguistics Women Writers Speak Out on
Intercultural Conflict
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Also listed as

required. This seminar will focus on
women's struggle to solve conflicts
ignited by intercultural
misunderstandings. We will read writers
from around the world -- Australia, India,
Senegal, the Caribbean, and UMBC's Anne
Brodsky -- as they reflect on their own
experiences or trace the stories of their
families or of courageous women with whom
they have worked. We will also examing the
discourse styels that the writers use for
their effectiveness in communicating their
stories. Each student will choose one of
the assigned texts to explore its social
context and forms of resistance in greater
depth. Students will share their research
in class presentations, discussions and a
seminar paper.
