Nanosructures
Grade Method: REG An introductory survey
of physics at the nanometer scale. We will
explore the physical basis of phenomena
that appear when the linear dimension of
an object, or device, shrinks below a
micron (or 1000nm). In this regime, the
physical behavior of such an object (such
as the cohesive energy and electrical
response) are determined by quantum
mechanics rather than those of
semi-classical and classical physics. In
addition the discussing the nature of
physics on the nanoscale, the course will
discuss the experimental techniques
currently used to construct and
characterize nanostructures such as
quantum wells, quantum wires, quantum
dots, metallic and rare-gas clusters, C60
and carbon nanotubes. Fabrication methods
such as epitaxy, self-assembly, and STM
manipulation will be presented. The course
will also include a discussion of recent
developments in modern nano- and picoscale
spectroscopies used to charactrize such
structures.
