from the Midi, which once seemed destined
to disappear, may now be reappearing in
the context of the European Union. In this
course we will examine the real
differences that still today make the
"Occitans" of the south unlike their
"Franchimand" compatriots, from language
and cityscapes to eating habits and
political tendencies. We will look at the
sources of these differences in history
and economics and at their expression in
literature and film, as we seek out
explanations for the distrust and
paternalism that characterize the
relationship of the Occitans with Paris.
The course will be taught in French.
