either as the result of an interruption of
5 years in their study of the language or
as a result of a weak language background.

or 103 may be used toward UMBC's
language/culture requirement. Students
registering in SPAN103 must also enroll in

challenges that Latino immigrants face in
their process of adjustment to life in the
United States. The experiences of
adjustment and survival in the receiving
country as well as the forces that
generate population displacements are
shaped by gender, nationality, class and
age, among others. Taking these variables
into account will allow us to see how the
impact of the adjustment to a new culture
affects different strata of the Latino
community. Of special interest will be the
analysis of differences by gender and by
generations within national immigrant
