Garcia Marquez, this course offers a study
of a variety of narrative forms produced
during the last forty years which explore
the contradictions of Latin American
societies. Aside from the above work,
texts include the films Missing
(Constantine Costa Gavras, USA, 1982), Bye
Bye Brazil (Carlos Diegues, Brazil, 1979),
the popular history Las venas abiertas de
American Latina (Eduardo Galeano, 1971),
the testimonio Me llamo Rigoberta Menchu y
asi me nacio la conciencia (Elizabeth
Burgos, 1985), and the communiquĊs of
Ejercita Zaptista de Liberacion Nacional
(Subcomandante Marcos, Desde las montanas
del sureste mexicano, 1999). The course
will be taught in Spanish.

continent have emerged as dynamic and
important agents of change, challenging
various countries to deal meaningfully
with issues of pluriculturalism and
economic and political marginalization.
SPAN 472 / 672 investigates the historic
and contemporary roots of these movements,
with case studies being drawn from
Ecuador, Mexico, Bolivia, and Guatemala.
Readings, papers, and class discussions
