important issues concerning women, gender,
and information technology(IT). Students
will consider such topics as the history
of women's involvement with IT, how women
are impacted by technology, how women and
girls fare in the educational setting as
welll as online, and the way that gender
intersects with IT in relation to other
dimensions of women's experience such as
race, class and age. Students connect
issues relevant to women and IT to their
own career choices, interact with women in
the IT field, and utilize technology for
research and presentation. Prereq: a
prior course in computer science,
information systems, or women's studies.

Politics of Population Control
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This course
examines the cultural politics of U.S,
population control policy and practices.
It will investigate the history of the
criminalization on contraception and
abortion and the restriction of
immigration in the late 19th and early
20th centuries, as well as the
liberalization of these laws in the 20th
century. The focus of the course will be
situate the specific history of population
policy within the wider context of gender,
sexual and racial politics, both national
and international. Specific attention will
be given to women's ogranizations and
advocacy on population and birth control

and activism. Students will complete a
research or internship project of their
design that focuses on gender. The seminar
includes discussion of methodological
issues central to conducting research
about gender and strategies for evaluating
research and methodologies used by other

scholarship. The research seminar may be
taken in conjunction with a 1 to 3 credit
hour elective internship (GWST 450
