Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD
GEP:N/A. GFR:Meets L. Because of a common
legacy of French colonialism, the
independent nation of Haiti and the French
overseas departments of Guadeloupe,
Martinique and French Guiana share an
important tradition of cultural works
produced in French. In this course we will
examine essays, fiction, memoirs, poetry,
theater, films by Caribbean authors and
place these works in their geographical,
historical, social and linguistic
intercultural contexts. Themes emphasized
in these cultural productions include
colonial repression and resistance,
tensions between French and local creole
languages, the awakening of an
Afro-Caribbean consciousness, gender
relations, and the construction of
Caribbean cultural identities within
postcolonial discourse in French.
