An Interdisciplinary Study of Modern
Iran's History,
(PermReq) Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD This seminar
examines Iran and its place in the world
over the last century. We will begin by
studying the main historical and cultural
roots of the modern Iranian identity: The
great Persian empires, Islam, Shiism, and
a blend of post-colonial populism best
referred to simply as "revolutionism."
Next, we will make our way through
20th-century Iran, focusing on the
country's political, economic, religious,
social, and cultural evolution. Among the
major developments to be studied will be
the constitutional revolution of 1905-06;
the processes of modernization and
secularization under Reza Shah
(1921-1941); the 1951 nationalization of
Iran's oil industry and 1953
U.S.-supported coup against Prime Minister
Mossadeq; the reign of "the Shah,"
Mohammad Reza Pahlavi; Iran's role in the
Cold War; the 1979 Islamic revolution; and
the Iran-Iraq war. We will then focus
intensively on contemporary
post-revolutionary Iran, leading up to and
including its current aspirations for
great-power status and nuclear weapons, as
well as its contentious relations with the
United States. Students should be prepared
to read a substantial amount of material
from different disciplinary sources,
engage actively in seminar discussions
using an interdisciplinary framework, and
write short analytical essays and a longer
research paper. Crosslisted with INDS 430.
