          several   classics   of   Latin   American
          narrative  from the last  forty years, and
          we    relate    those   texts   to   their
          socio-historical contexts.  The narratives
          are  Gabriel  GarcŇa M─rquez  (One Hundred
          Years  of Solitude),  Eduardo Galeano (The
          Open  Veins  of Latin  America), Elizabeth
          Burgos    (I,   Rigoberta   Menchă),   and
          selections    from    the    writings   of
          Subcomandante    Marcos.   Several   films
          complement  the  readings.  All  readings,
          lectures,  discussions, exams,  and papers
          are in Spanish.

          organization  in  Latin  America.   From a
          gender perspective the course will analyze
          women's  agency in Latin American history.
          From  Malinche to  Bachelet different ways
          of  doing  politics have  been transformed
          with   the   influence   of  the  feminist
          movements  in Latin  America. Prereq: SPAN
          308  and one other  SPAN course above 304.
