Globalization in Local Worlds: Narrative
Perspectives
Grade Method: REG/P-F/AUD Globalization in
Local Worlds: Narrative Perspectives
examines the meanings and effects of
globalization processes on the local, or
micro, level. In contrast to recent news
reports that focus on the large scale
economic linkages across the globe, this
course uses qualitative ethnographies from
several non-western cultures to explore
the interaction between globalization and
indigenous cultures, particularly the
relationship among global processes and
identity, gender, and well-being. The
course also will use ethnographic
narratives to analyze the influence of
tourism, media, and immigration on
traditional social relationships and
social structures. By exploring
globalization with a qualitative, emic
perspective, this course will provide
students with insight into both the subtle
and overt social and cultural webs
connecting and transforming societies
worldwide.
