FREN 103  Intensive Review of Elementary French                   4 credits

          designed  for students  who have completed
          level   3  in  high  school  and  who  are
          nevertheless   unprepared   for  FREN  201
          either as the result of an interruption of
          five  years in their study of the language
          or   as   a  result  of  a  weak  language
          background.  Permission of  the department
          is  required. Students  may receive credit
          for  either  102 or 103  but not both, and
          either  102  or  103  may  be  used toward
          UMBC's language/culture requirement.  FREN

FREN 339  Exploration in Ideas, Literature and the                3 credits
          Arts

          authors,  major  intellectual  trends, and
          key  texts.   We  will  especially examine
          Voltaire's    revolutionary    ideas    on
          religion,    literature,    and   culture,
          Rousseau's vision of social inequality and
          political  theory, and Montesquieu's views
          on  alterity  and  political  systems. The
          ultimate objective behind the course is to
          understand,  among others, the great shift
          from  the "Ancien Regime"  to the "Nouveau
          Regime,"  or  from  absolute  monarchy  to
          social repulicanism.

          reasons,  French  is today  an official or
          administrative language in several regions
          or  countries  in  Europe, Africa  and the
          Caribbean.   In   some   fourteen  African
          countries,   it   is   the  only  official
          language.   However,  French  is  not  the
          majority   language   in   any   of  these
          countries.   In  this  course,  taught  in
          French,   we   will   examine   the  often
          conflicting relations existing between the
          status,  uses  and  images  of  the French
          language  in the  Contemporary Francophone
          world.  The course will focus on improving
          students' advanced writing skills. Prereq:
          Fren 310.
