GERO 798  Special Topics in Gerontology                           3 credits

          Grade  Method: REG Topic:  The Aging Self.
          The notion of "the self" is fundamental to
          the  study  of  gerontology.  This  course
          reviews  the  concept  of  self  from  the
          perspectives  of  anthropology, psychology
          and   sociology,   and  shows  how  it  is
          critical  for understanding the experience
          of  aging. Lectures will cover the history
          of  this  concept  and its  complex usage.
          Related  notions,  such  as individualism,
          will   be  explored.  A  wide  variety  of
          authors  will  be  used to  supplement the
          lectures  including  Berger  and Luckmann,
          Kaufman, Becker, and many others.
