will study selected historical events of
the 20th century in Germany (WWI and II,
economic depression and inflation,
cultural bloom in the Weimar republic, the
Third Reich, the Holocaust, the two
Germanies, re-unification, student revolt,
immigration) as reflected in
autobiographical writings of german or
German-speaking authors. We will read and
analyze autobiographies, fictionalized
autobiographies, diaries, letters, eye
witness accounts, and journalistic
writings to understand how personal
experiences have impacted the individual
view of historical events. The course
will be taught in English and the readings
will be in English translation. No
knowledge of German required.
