          Galdos: Sex and Politics

          and  politics are prominent in the work of
          the  Spanish  writer  Benito  Perez Galdos
          (1843  Las  Palmas de Gran  Canaria - 1920
          Madrid).  Galdos  narrated the  history of
          nineteenth-century  Spain through his many
          novels which are filled with psychological
          and   sociological   insights.   In  fact,
          contemporary   historians   refer  to  his
          novels  to document their studies, and his
          characters    have    been   analyzed   by
          psychologists.  His  well  shaped  stories
          have   been   frequently  adapted  to  the
          screen,  in Spain and  elsewhere.  In this
          course  we will study  four novels and the
          films   based   on  them:  Dona  Perfecta;
          Tormento;   Nazarin,   and   Misericordia.
          Taught in Spanish. Prerequisites: SPAN 311
          AND SPAN 312.

          mujer mexicana en contexto

          Castellano's  play /El Eterno Femenino/ as
          a   guide   through  Mexican  history  and
          culture,   this  seminar  focuses  on  the
          multifaceted Mexican woman and her role in
          society. Various points in history will be
          studied  from  the /Conquista/  to the XXI
          Century. This course is taught in Spanish.
