and politics are prominent in the work of
the Spanish writer Benito Perez Galdos
(1843 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - 1920
Madrid). Galdos narrated the history of
nineteenth-century Spain through his many
novels which are filled with psychological
and sociological insights. In fact,
contemporary historians refer to his
novels to document their studies, and his
characters have been analyzed by
psychologists. His well shaped stories
have been frequently adapted to the
screen, in Spain and elsewhere. In this
course we will study four novels and the
films based on them: Dona Perfecta;
Tormento; Nazarin, and Misericordia.
Taught in Spanish. Prerequisites: SPAN 311
