ASL 101 American Sign Language I (L) 3 credits

An introduction to American Sign Language. Emphasizes simple receptive and expressive conversational skills and the unique features of American Sign Language grammar. Also provides a historical overview of American Sign Language and an introduction to deaf culture and folklore. Videotapes, films, readings, and nonverbal exercises are part of the instruction. ASL 102 American Sign Language II (L) 3 credits

A continuation of ASL 101. Provides a higher level of receptive and conversational practice and introduces several "uninterpreted" activities with and for the deaf. Lectures develop further aspects of deaf culture, non-American Sign systems, and other communications systems by members of the deaf community. Prerequisite: ASL 101 or permission of the instructor.
