SOWK 311 Introduction to Field Experience in Social 3 credits

Offers the opportunity to observe the delivery of social services within selected agencies. Students are assigned to an agency for a beginning experience in examining how social work services are provided. Field work experience is combined with seminar instruction. (Spring and summer.) Note: Open to all students. Recommended for social work majors. May be repeated for credit. Pass/Fail only. Prerequisite: SOWK 260 and permission of the department. Children Policies, Programs, and Services
for Children

Presents the current situation in services for children, as well as a historic perspective on the development of our society's perception of children's needs. It attempts to go beyond the traditional definitions of child welfare as an institution and encompasses consideration of a social welfare system that would include family policy advocacy, programs to enhance socialization of children, helping services and services to surrogate families. Select interventive techniques appropriate for work with children are presented, and skills are developed. Prerequisite: SOWK 260 or consent of the instructor.
