Immigration Policy and Social Construction
of Immigration in American Society
| This course studies the impact of international immigration on American society at the present time, and focuses on the contradictions that Americans have developed over immigration issues. Defining themselves as part of a country built on immigration, Americans have always been ambivalent about the newcomers. The social construction of the value of immigration in America’s past seems to contradict with the “perception of the new immigrants.” Analyzes America’s discourse about immigration at different historical moments through the study of immigration policy and its implications. The course will include both traditional classroom meetings and online classes. Final papers are due at the end of the second session. Note: Also listed as MLL 690. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor is required. |
